Description

Dive into the fascinating life of honeybees and our sustainable beekeeping business.

Waiheke Island’s warm microclimate and native bush covered hills make it one of New Zealand’s most beautiful places to keep bees, and I’ve been beekeeping here since 2007.

In this 90-minute tour, you’ll suit up, inspect a working hive, look for the queen, maybe see a bee hatch and taste honey straight from the comb. We finish under the pergola, eating raw honey on a warm crumpets, drinking tea or coffee, chatting and answering all your bee questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the tour located?

On Waiheke! 78 Hauraki Road, Plam Beach, Waiheke. Look for the big yellow HONEY sign and the street sign, walk down the driveway, follow the path and steps around the house to meet the tour under the covered pergola.

How do I get to Waiheke Island?

There are 3 ferry services to Waiheke from Auckland, choose what works best for you. Island Direct has higher service levels, Fullers has more sailings, Sealink is the only Eastern Suburbs and vehicle option. From downtown Auckland CBD the ferry takes ~40mins For timetable and fares see https://islanddirect.co.nz/pages/timetable OR https://www.fullers.co.nz/timetables-and-fares/?from=AUCK&to=WAIH From Half Moon Bay in the Eastern suburbs www.sealink.co.nz run a car and passenger ferry to Kennedy Point Wharf on Waiheke. Allow plenty of time to queue for your ferry and during peak summer we recommend pre-booking, the rest of the year is pretty chill.

How do I get from Matiatia passenger ferry wharf to the tour address?

TAXI - there is a taxi stand in the wharf car park, journey time is <10mins. There is limited Uber on Waiheke, YourRide App is similar. CAR - <10min drive. If you are a CityHop member you can use the app to book cars from Matiatia. BUS - take the 502 from the end of the wharf, travel ~13mins to stop 1192 "Pope's Corner", then walk 400m to 78 Hauraki Road. BIKE - rent an eBike (bookings recommended) from eridewaiheke.co.nz collect your bike on the wharf, journey time ~18 mins. We are located on the 5-Bays-Ride route. WALK - we are on the Te Ara Hura Walkway, it is a 1 hour walk via the roads, longer if you take the scenic coastal walkways.

What do I need to bring? How to I prepare for the bee experience?

Please dress for the weather forecast, the experience is outdoors.
Wear closed-toe shoes or sneakers, along with long trousers, jeans or leggings so you can comfortably pull on an overall style bee suit. A peak cap is great at keeping your bee suit hood off your face and if you have long hair, a hair tie is recommended to keep it off your face while you are secured in your suit.
Even our gently bees can get agitated by scents that mimic the bee alarm pheromones. Please refrain from wearing fragrances or strongly scented products and don't eat bananas for breakfast :-)
